Affectionately known as cottage cheese thighs or orange peel hips, cellulite is a collection of fat that pushes against the connective tissue beneath the skin leaving an uneven surface that looks lumpy, puckered, or dimpled. Cellulite can appear almost anywhere on the body, but the stomach, hips, legs, upper arms, and butt are the most common areas.

Though cellulite is often associated with obesity, individuals of all sizes can be inflicted with cellulite. Because cellulite has just as much to do with the skin as it does the underlying fat tissue, simply losing weight will not necessarily eliminate cellulite.

In more scientific terms,  cellulite,  (AKA gynoid lipodystrophy or GLD),  is the herniation of subcutaneous fat within fibrous connective tissue that manifests as skin dimpling.

Reduce the appearance of cellulite

History of Cellulite

The term “cellulite” was first used in the 1920s by spas and beauty service providers, and began appearing in English-language publications in the late 1960s, with the earliest reference made in Vogue magazine:  “Like a swift migrating fish, the word cellulite has suddenly crossed the Atlantic.”

What Causes Cellulite?

People can develop cellulite on the hips, buttocks, and thighs, though it can appear on other areas as well. Cellulite appears like orange peel dimples, generally with weight gain, when skin loses elasticity, and there is excess fat and a lack of stretching of the fibrous connective tissue bands that attach the skin to underlying muscles. When subcutaneous tissue is pressed up against lax skin, some of the fat cells beneath make it through the skin’s connective tissue. As the fat pushes against the loose skin, cellulite occurs.

The appearance of cellulite can happen even to healthy women. It can be the result of one or a combination of factors, including diet and lifestyle, hormonal imbalances, genetic factors, and predisposition. To get rid of cellulite, it is possible to reduce the lumpy skin by changing some behaviors, but it usually depends on how much cellulite is present and the patient’s body fat percentage. While it may be possible to reduce the appearance of dimpled skin with treatments like laser treatments, cellulite cream, acoustic wave therapy, and deep massage, with more serious cases, other cellulite treatments may be necessary to reduce visible cellulite.

Diet and Lifestyle

Bad eating habits, a high-stress lifestyle, and inactivity are all contributing factors to the formation of cellulite. After you get rid of cellulite with any cellulite treatments, it’s important to begin eating a balanced diet, getting down to a healthy weight, and practicing a healthy lifestyle so more cellulite doesn’t develop.

Hormonal Factors

An imbalance of estrogen relative to progesterone may be associated with the development of cellulite. Other hormones including insulin, cortisol, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones, and prolactin are believed to participate in the development of cellulite.

Genetics

There is a genetic component of cellulite as well.  Studies have shown that both the presence and degree of cellulite is similar between females within the same family.

Predisposition

Most women of East Asian descent are less predisposed than caucasian women of European descent or black women.

Other Contributing Factors

Though body fat is certainly a major factor in the appearance of cellulite, there are a number of other possible contributing factors such as quick weight loss, lack of regular exercise, dehydration, metabolism speed, skin thickness, and skin colour.

How to Treat Cellulite

Because cellulite is a multifactorial condition, it can be resistant to some cellulite treatments. Aside from topical skincare products and injectables, cellulite treatments include non-invasive fat-reduction. Specialist Skin Solutions offers an innovative treatment, known as truSculpt® iD, designed to melt fat and reduce cellulite.

Specialist Skin Solutions Lorn

What is truSculpt® iD?

When many patients think about contouring the body, they often think of invasive procedures like liposuction. TruSculpt® iD is a non-invasive treatment that uses radio frequency (RF) energy to heat deep layers of the skin. This heat not only eliminates fat cells in the targeted area, but it stimulates the skin, making it tighter and smoother. While highly effective for eradicating unwanted pockets of fat, truSculpt® iD can also improve skin tone and destroy dreaded cellulite.

How Does truSculpt® iD Work?

TruSculpt® iD uses Monopolar Radio Frequency technology to target fat cells selectively. By delivering radio frequency energy through the skin, fat cells absorb the energy in the form of heat, effectively destroying the unsightly body fat without harming the skin at all. Once destroyed, the body naturally takes over and flushes out the old fat cells through the lymphatic system.

Heat also encourages the natural production of collagen and elastin,  two primary nutrients responsible for skin health,. This action leads to stronger and tighter skin and allows the skin to contain the underlying fatty tissues that cause cellulite.

TruSculpt ® iD Procedure

The procedure, which takes from 15 to 60 minutes,  feels similar to a hot stone massage. Patients have not reported any pain or discomfort during  the procedure and no prescription pain medications, cooling gels, or compression garments are required. Mild redness, swelling, and tenderness can last for approximately 10-12 hours, for which patients are advised to take mild OTC pain medication such as Tylenol.

TruSculpt iD® treatment normally requires 1 to 2 sessions, 4-6 weeks apart.

How cellulite forms

Downtime After truSculpt® iD

The truSculpt® iD  system is safe, comfortable, and non-invasive, allowing patients to resume  normal activities immediately.

Side Effects of truSculpt® iD

One of the benefits of truSculpt® iD is that there are few, if any, side effects related to the procedure. Some minor side effects include:

  • Redness
  • Sweating
  • Mild tenderness in the treated areas

Is truSculpt® iD Painful?

Easily adjusted to conform to each patient’s needs, the level of heat can be adapted so each person feels comfortable and experiences nothing more than mild discomfort.

Orange Peel Skin

Is truSculpt® iD  Safe?

One of the main advantages of truSculpt® iD  is that it is a simple and comfortable procedure, requiring no anaesthetic, no downtime, and maybe most importantly, no knives or needles!

TruSculpt® iD is a non-invasive,  clinically proven, highly effective, and completely safe treatment that permanently destroys fat cells from even hard-to-reach areas. TruSculpt® iD is the only TGA-approved device of its kind that offers a non-invasive treatment option for body sculpting and fat reduction.  It has been clinically proven to permanently reduce fat by up to 24% in as little as one treatment.

*Note: Several treatments may be required to see a noticeable reduction of cellulite or make cellulite disappear.

How Long Does It Take To See Results?

Maximum results are visible after approximately 10-12 weeks, however some patients begin to see improvement after as little as 4 weeks.  Unlike invasive procedures like liposuction that remove fat, TruSculpt iD®  causes fat cell death.  This disruption of cells allows the fat to leak through lymphatic system, shrink, and gradually expel. The truSculpt® iD procedure takes just a few minutes, and patients can expect to see full results 6-12 weeks after their last treatment— the amount of time the body needs to clear away the destroyed fat.

With truSculpt® iD, patients can get the slimmer shape they desire, even in areas that have been resistant to diet and exercise, like the abs and the hips.

Minimally invasive fat reduction treatments are simple solutions for removing fat, reducing cellulite, and smoothing and refining skin for patients adverse to reconstructive surgery, and for whom regular exercise and diet have failed. While there are many options, one cosmetic treatment. that’s gaining traction in the world of body contouring is body mesotherapy.

Body mesotherapy is a technique, especially effective in the treatment of cellulite and local thickness. With body mesotherapy, substances are placed under the skin through a series of injections containing fat-dissolving properties. The results are increased firmness to the targeted areas and a more youthful appearance to the skin.

Because the procedure involves injecting a material through multiple entry points, the healing process is activated by the body, resulting in better blood circulation to the skin and increased cell renewal in the application area.

Body mesotherapy is a non-invasive, injectable fat reduction treatment with few side effects and little downtime. Sometimes referred to as injection lipolysis or lipodissolve, customised solutions are tailored to patients specific goals and needs, and can include ingredients like phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholate along with components such as plant extracts, hyaluronic acid, vasodilators, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, amino acids, enzymes, nutrients, antibiotics, and hormones.

Targeting stubborn fat deposits in the back, arms, neck, thighs, and stomach, mesotherapy treatments improve microcirculation, shrink fat cells, promote lymphatic drainage, and remove fibrous connective tissues, commonly known as cellulite.

Primarily being used to reduce the appearance of cellulite, fat dissolution, and body contouring for women who’ve had trouble getting rid of extra weight, mesotherapy is now also being tested for pain management and hair loss.

Cosmetic Concerns Treated by Mesotherapy

Excess Body Fat: Variable and customisable ingredients work to assist the body in fat reduction for rejuvenation of treated areas.

Cellulite: Mesotherapy injections may be used to treat cellulite and skin dimpling.

Benefits of Adipose Tissue

While it may seem counterintuitive, healthy adipose (fat) tissue harbours energy such as triglycerides that provide fuel for the body. But while fat loss is not really an issue for young people, losing troublesome fat deposits can be problematic as we age. Though many diet plans and exercise regimens claim to work to quickly and easily erase fat, some fatty tissue is resilient and difficult to eradicate.

Subcutaneous fat, the layer of fat just between the skin and the muscles or bone, is used by the body as an insulator for heat loss, a barrier against dermal infection, and a protective cushion against external stressors.

Because the body sees this fat as the last line of defence, subcutaneous fat tends to remain even when the body is deprived of adequate nutrition which is why diet and exercise alone are not sufficient for shedding this type of fat.

Common Places For Mesotherapy Treatment

  • Remove Unwanted Fat and Reduce Cellulite From:
  • Abdomen
  • Love Handles (Flanks)
  • Submental (under the chin)

Ideal Candidate for a Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy involves multiple intradermal and subcutaneous injections with a solution that breaks down unwanted, localised areas of fat. The ideal candidate for mesotherapy has stubborn fat deposits and troublesome cellulite or dimples that are resistant to diet and exercise. Mesotherapy is not recommended for the obese, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, those on anticoagulants or cardiac medication, or those with diabetes, liver, or kidney disease.

How Does Mesotherapy Work?

During a mesotherapy session, a syringe is inserted into the treatment areas and a fat-dissolving solution with active ingredients is dispensed. This solution works its way into the fatty tissue where the cells eventually experience fat cell death, or apoptosis. Apoptosis, the process of programmed cell death, apoptosis works by eliminating unwanted or unnecessary fat.

During the early stages of fetal development, the process of apoptosis is responsible for eliminating certain extraneous fat cells, such as those between the fingers of a developing hand. In adults, apoptosis is used to rid the body of cells that have been damaged beyond repair as the result of disease or injury. A similar process occurs during mestherapy treatment during which unwanted fat cells are intentionally targeted for destruction. Once fat cells have experienced apoptosis, the body naturally sheds them from the target area(s), leaving behind a contoured, slimmer appearance. Many patients choose the mesotherapy procedure because the treatment is so simple yet effective against stubborn fat and unsightly cellulite in the buttocks, abdomen, arms, back, and thighs. With no lengthy treatment or recovery time, results happen after just a couple of sessions.

Number of Mesotherapy Treatments Needed

A consultation is necessary to determine the number of mesotherapy treatment sessions required to reach the patient’s aesthetic goals such as dimpled skin which vary from person to person.

On average, a patient requires 10 to 15 series of injections depending on how much cellulite and excess fat is present. The more cellulite, the more treatment sessions may be required. The treatment is associated with minimal discomfort while providing impressive long-lasting results, especially when combined with other skin rejuvenating treatments.

Average Recovery Associated with a Mesotherapy

Most patients recover from mesotherapy within a few days. Normal activity can be resumed immediately, but exercise should be limited for two days. Additionally, non steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) should not be taken for 48 hours after treatment.

Potential Side Effects of Mesotherapy

Potential side effects for mesotherapy are very mild with a few exceptions. Possible side effects following a mesotherapy procedure include redness, burning, stinging, swelling, bruising, and nodule formation at the injection site, though in rare cases, allergic reactions and infection can occur.

Expected Results of Mesotherapy Treatment

Mesotherapy results will show after multiple initial injections and several treatments with maximum visible effects occurring in 8 to 15 weeks. Results will change with weight gain, pregnancy, and ageing.

Average Cost of Mesotherapy Treatment

A mesotherapy procedure can cost anywhere from $250 to $12,000, though the actual cost is dependantupon location, certification of provider, and length and involvement of the procedure.

How Long Does Mesotherapy Last?

With a course of 4-6 mesotherapy treatments, patients can expect results to last 12 to 18 months after the recommended course of treatment is completed.

Cellulite treatments for unwanted fat

For optimal results, patients are advised to continue treatments to maintain their desired appearance.
