If you’re seeing red every time you look in the mirror, it might be a common medical condition known as rosacea.  Causing red blotches, swelling, and bumps, rosacea is a  vascular disorder characterized by blood vessels near the skin surface that dilate suddenly, increasing local blood flow and resulting in flushing and redness to the skin.

A chronic medical condition affecting more than 3 million people, rosacea can appear on the skin for a short time, several years, or be a lifelong problem. It can be caused by anything from food allergies and sun exposure to environmental toxins and genetics.

Commonly mistaken for acne or other skin conditions, rosacea can affect just about anyone, but is more common among middle-aged women with fair skin. For many people, rosacea causes more than just facial flushing and redness. Symptoms of the skin condition may also include acne-like bumps, eye irritation, and thickened skin. Although there is no consensus among medical professionals about the reasons some people develop  rosacea when others do not. It cannot be cured and left untreated, this skin condition can get worse with time.

Though various treatments can control symptoms of rosacea, this chronic condition is ultimately best managed by avoiding certain triggers.

Rosacea Triggers to Avoid

Rosacea triggers vary from person to person, but heat, cold air, extreme exercise, sun exposure, stress, and medications that increase blood flow to the surface of the skin can aggravate rosacea.

Foods do not “cause” rosacea, but some ingredients are known triggers.

Spicy Food

Adding hot peppers or ordering food with an extra kick, spicy foods may be one of many underlying causes of rosacea flares. Cayenne pepper, red pepper, black pepper, curry, paprika, and other spicy ingredients can cause tiny blood vessels underneath your skin to dilate, resulting in flushing. By substituting other ingredients like oregano, sage, and basil, your dishes will get that added flavor without triggering rosacea symptoms.

Alcoholic Beverages

Red wine, bourbon, gin, vodka, champagne, and beer can all be triggers for certain people prone to rosacea symptoms.

Sun Exposure

Basking in the sun might be fun, but if you suffer from rosacea, it might not be a day at the beach for you.  Sun exposure is the most common  trigger of rosacea that stimulates the blood vessels to dilate.

Stress

Stress is among the things that make rosacea worse. And though you can’t always avoid stressful situations, you can help minimize their effect on your life and your skin.

Exercise

Exercise is good for the body and the soul, but it’s also a factor that can aggravate rosacea. Exercise elevates your heart rate, which causes flushing from increased blood flow to the skin. Instead of exercising during the hotter peak hours of the day, working out during off-peak hours when the sun is low and temperatures are cooler could help to alleviate symptoms.

Hot Drinks

36% of rosacea sufferers point to hot drinks as their primary trigger.   Hot chocolate, tea, and coffee,  which cause the blood vessels to expand, can cause flushing and redness.

Hot Temperatures

Heat is among the things that make rosacea worse. And it’s not just a challenge during the summer — it can be a year-round problem. The winter is the time we close our windows and turn up the heat, so open some windows to keep your living spaces cool and less dry. In summer, seek out air conditioning whenever possible.  Avoid saunas and hot tubs.

Extreme Cold

Winter winds and cold temperatures are common things that trigger rosacea. Cover your face with a scarf or ski mask, be sure to wear sunscreen, and limit hot beverages if that’s a trigger for you. Ask your dermatologist about a skin barrier ointment that could protect your skin from the cold weather elements. Get to know your personal rosacea triggers, advises Stuart. “Avoiding triggers does not seem to slow the progression of this skin condition, but a thorough knowledge of them will help you coexist with this disease more easily,” she says.

Makeup

Applying makeup can be a double-edged sword for people with rosacea. On one hand, it can cover up redness, but on the other hand, it can aggravate rosacea. Using water-based, non-allergenic,fragrance-free makeup helps. Cosmetics that contain alcohol, menthol, witch hazel, and eucalyptus oil tend to be irritating for people with this skin condition.

To avoid cosmetics that trigger your condition, test all new products on your neck before putting them on your face. If you have a reaction, take note of the product’s ingredients to try to isolate which ones aggravate your rosacea.

Mask-wearing

Maskne, or mask acne, is caused by excessive wearing of PPE face protection and has become problematic for people of all age groups, especially those on the front line. Caused by breathing and talking under the mask which produces a wet heat, causing excess oil and sebum production, rosacea sufferers may experience flare-ups when wearing masks for prolonged periods of time.

Tips to Help Reduce Symptoms

Moisturize

Moisturizer is an essential skin-care product for rosacea sufferers. They create a barrier that locks out irritants and can help keep symptoms at bay, but choosing the wrong one can actually make your condition worse. When choosing a moisturizer, opt for one that’s oil-free, fragrance-free, and hypoallergenic-–the fewer ingredients, the better.

Use Gentle Cleansers

The type of cleanser you use can also affect rosacea symptoms. Harsh cleansers and astringents can actually make rosacea much worse.  Although rosacea might look like acne, it’s not. Many acne treatments will irritate rosacea, including products that contain retinoids or salicylic acid. Your cleanser should be fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and free of harsh exfoliants as scrubbing can make the condition worse and cause scarring.

Be Wary of Facials

Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and spa facials may be good for your best friend, but they could be your skin’s worst enemy.  Many of these medical-grade treatments can irritate the skin, which can aggravate rosacea. If you want a rejuvenating treatment to make your skin look younger or smoother, you can work with your dermatologist to find other skin-care options.

Opt for Mineral-Based, Fragrance-Free Makeup

Makeup may be used to help cover up ruddy cheeks, but products containing certain ingredients could worsen rosacea symptoms.  The formula of any makeup specifically for rosacea matters too. When choosing a foundation, opt for pressed powder over liquid which can clog  pores and make rosacea symptoms worse.

Practice Sun Safety

The top trigger for rosacea flare-ups is sun exposure. So, whenever you’re in the sun, practice sun safety. Apply sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and stay in the shade as much as possible. Be wary of sunscreens containing harsh chemicals, however.  Opt for sunscreens with physical barriers such as zinc oxide or titanium instead and apply generously and reapply often.

Get to the Bottom of it

Finding ways to reduce stress and minimize situations that increase blood flow to your face can help minimize rosacea symptoms.

While there is no cure for rosacea, there are ways to avoid triggering its symptoms and treatments available that can be tailored to the individual’s needs.

Taking notice of which make-up causes breakouts, paying attention to foods that trigger symptoms, and keeping track of external factors can help you get to the bottom of the cause of your rosacea. Treatments that prove effective include everything from topical medications like creams, lotions, and gels, and medications that may help reduce inflammation and redness.

Oral antibiotics can be effective for more serious symptoms. For patients with dilated blood vessels, permanent redness, and other changes on the nose and cheeks, there are advanced procedures such as Laser Genesis available.

People often say that the hands are a dead giveaway for a person’s age.  That’s because apart from the face and neck, the hands are the most visibly exposed area of the body. Specialist Skin Solutions has treatment plans that will turn back the hands of time on your extremities painlessly, quickly, and effectively.

Extrinsic Ageing

Due to both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, the appearance of the hands changes with time.

Extrinsic ageing, which affects the epidermal and dermal layers, is a result of factors including exposure to the sun, chemicals, and smoking.

Ways extrinsic ageing manifests on the hands

Actinic keratosis: Rough, scaly patch on the skin that develops from years of sun exposure

Solar lentigines: Harmless patches of darkened skin, AKA dark spots or  age spots, common in people over the age of 40, solar lentigines results from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation causing local proliferation of melanocytes and accumulation of melanin within the skin cells (keratinocytes).

A solar lentigo is a flat, well-circumscribed patch that can be round, oval or irregular in shape, with colour varying in skin colour, size, and number. Though they occur in light and dark skin, they tend to be more numerous in fair-skinned individuals.

Hypopigmentation-punctate palmoplantar keratoderma syndrome: A rare, genetic, epidermal disease characterized by punctate keratoderma on palms and soles associated with irregularly shaped hypopigmented macules, typically localized on the extremities.

Solar purpura: A condition, most often affected on areas exposed to the sun, often occurring on the hands, forearms, and legs, causes one or more flat, purple bruises.

Intrinsic Ageing

In contrast, intrinsic ageing alters the deeper soft tissue planes, decreasing skin elasticity, soft tissue volume,  and dermal vascularity. Signs of intrinsic ageing include wrinkles, translucent and thinner skin, and prominent veins, joints, and tendons.

Many patients notice that their ageing  hands sharply contrast with their newly rejuvenated faces, and request hand rejuvenation procedures. However, despite great advances in facial cosmetic procedures, hand rejuvenation has been slower to catch up.

Hand rejuvenation refers to a whole suite of aesthetic techniques that improve the appearance and feel of your hands.  Hand rejuvenation procedures result in softer, plumper, brighter, and smoother hands.

Book Your Appointment Today!

Types of hand rejuvenation

Just like several types of rejuvenation for the face exist, there are several treatment options to restore the youthful appearance of the hands. Most hand rejuvenation treatments focus on extrinsic ageing by unifying pigmentation and skin resurfacing.

These treatments, including topical acids like tretinoin and vitamin C, topical 5-fluorouracil, bleaching agents, microdermabrasion, chemical peeling, and laser treatments, have been shown to be the most effective and safe. At Specialist Skin Solutions, we offer a whole suite of rejuvenation techniques that will have your hands looking radiant and youthful again in no time.

Dermal Fillers

Just like those that take years off your facial age, dermal fillers are effective for contouring the hands, subtly filling in wrinkles and adding volume to plump bony hands and sagging skin.

Dermal Filler is a medical injectable gel made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance already found in your body that attracts and binds with water, hydrating and plumping ageing skin anywhere on the body, including the extremities. When injected into the hands, dermal fillers restore volume, soften and fill lines, contour, and rejuvenate.

The ideal complement to laser treatments, which work wonders to resurface the appearance of hands, dermal  fillers complete the process by adding volume to eliminate that bony, veiny look. That’s not to say that bones, tendons and veins don’t have important functions— but dermal filler just makes them less noticeable by plumping the surrounding tissue.

Though dermal fillers are not permanent, results can last between 6 to 18 months, depending on the area treated and the product used.

At Specialist Skin  Solutions, we believe in educating our clients, which is why a thorough consultation takes place prior to every treatment to discuss the areas of your concern,  treatment options, the amount and type of product to be used, as well as associated costs.

Laser Genesis

Laser Genesis is the latest in technological innovations, a medical procedure effective for softening wrinkles and reducing dark spots on the hands.

Restoring and rejuvenating the skin of the hands from beneath the surface, Laser Genesis uses a heat-based laser to target deep layers of the skin. Triggering the skin’s natural healing process to stimulate collagen production, Laser Genesis leaves hands resilient, radiant, and healthy-looking.

Laser Genesis does not wound the skin. Instead, it works by penetrating the top layer of skin and delivering thousands of micro-pulses of light to the dermis, the middle layer of the skin. The warming action shrinks blood vessels, breaks down scar tissue, and stimulates collagen production, leaving skin free of broken blood vessels, and dark areas. The state-of-the-art laser hand treatment diminishes sun spots, age spots and other hyperpigmentation imperfections, as well as lines and wrinkles. Laser treatments are an ideal complement to dermal fillers. While laser treatments work wonders to resurface the skin on the hands, dermal fillers complete the process by adding volume to eliminate that bony, veiny look.

Chemical Peels

Not just for the face, chemical peels can be beneficial for the hands as well. By exfoliating the outer layer of skin, which can become dry, tough, and aged from our many tasks and activities throughout the day, a chemical peel can not only improve the texture of the skin, but it can also help fade dark marks and tighten some of the laxity that can develop in this area over time.

Is hand rejuvenation right for you?

In general, anyone who is unhappy with the way time has changed the appearance of their hands are good candidates for hand rejuvenation. More specifically, you should consider hand rejuvenation if any of these conditions apply to your hands:

  • Veiny appearance
  • Wrinkled and crepey
  • Thin skin
  • Age spots or sunspots
  • Very dry skin

It’s never too late to turn back the hands of time.

Unsightly rolls and flab just beneath your jawline? You don’t have to take it on the chin any longer!

They say two is better than one, but when it comes to chins, no one wants to double down.  If you’re ready to ditch your double chin, truSculpt®iD,  a non-surgical procedure that eliminates fat and contours the jawline, can give you that chiseled chin you’ve been longing for once and for all.

There are many factors that contribute to a double chin, not the least of which is age. As you grow older, the collagen production in your skin naturally begins to decline. Since collagen is responsible for the tone and elasticity of your skin, the effects are varied. From ravaging wrinkles to sagging cheeks, your skin begins to loosen, resulting in a double chin.

Until now, tackling a double chin has been an exercise in futility since the factors that lead to a double chin — genetics, gravity, and the loss of supporting fibers — are tough enemies to combat.

Tricks for Reducing Chin and Jawline Fat – Do They Work?

While it’s true that if you don’t exercise the muscles below the neck, they’ll become weak and flabby, can exercise really cure the downward drift? There have been a wide variety of silly exercises touted as cures for the double chin over the years. From facial yoga to whistling to the sky, chewing gum, and the Lion’s Yawn (above,) while these tricks might work when done over and over and over again, the reality is no one has the time, patience, or stamina to do enough to really make a difference.

Then there’s weight loss. Sure, purging extra pounds can reduce the fat in your face, but the truth is, even if you do lose weight, it still might not eliminate your double chin.

Then, there’s surgery. Painful, expensive, and intrusive to everyday life, going under the knife isn’t the answer for most people.

Chin up

But there’s good news! With truSculpt® iD, the latest non-surgical, non-invasive, clinically proven, and TGA-approved treatment for eliminating the dreaded double chin, a quick 15-minute procedure done out of the hospital is a simple solution to losing the double chin forever!

That’s because with truSculpt iD, a painless procedure performed in an experienced and reputable provider’s office, fat simply melts away, leaving you with a sexy neckline, a sculpted jaw, and a chiseled chin without surgery, silly stunts, or fat-loss fads.

What is truSculpt® iD?

truSculpt® iD uses Monopolar Radio Frequency technology to target fat cells selectively. Using a handpiece that emits the radio frequency energy, the device is placed over the targeted area, while pulses of energy cause fat cells to heat up and shrink, promoting skin contraction for a slimming and smoothing effect. Easily adjusted to conform to each patient’s needs, the level of heat can be adapted, so each person feels comfortable and experiences very little to no pain.

truSculpt® iD is a non-invasive,  clinically proven, highly effective, and completely safe treatment that permanently eliminates fat cells from even the hardest-to-reach areas. truSculpt® iDis the only TGA-approved device of its kind that offers a non-invasive treatment option for body sculpting and fat reduction.  It has been clinically proven to permanently reduce fat by up to 24% in as little as one treatment.

By delivering radio frequency energy through the skin, fat cells absorb the energy in the form of heat, effectively destroying the unsightly fat without harming the skin at all. Once destroyed, the body naturally takes over and flushes out the old fat cells through the lymphatic system.

The procedure takes just a few minutes, and you can expect to see full results 6-12 weeks after your last treatment–that’s the amount of time  your body needs time to clear away the destroyed fat.

With truSculpt® iD, patients can get the definition they desire, even in areas that have been resistant to diet and exercise, like the chin and jaw. One of the main advantages of truSculpt® iD is that it is a simple and comfortable procedure, requiring no anesthetic, no downtime, and maybe most importantly, no knives or needles!

Common Areas of Treatment

Thanks to the size and number of handpieces,   truSculpt® iD can address a variety of concerns and target hard-to-reach areas of the face and body, including the jaw, chin, neck, arms, inner thighs, and back regardless of loose skin or skin laxity.

Common concerns addressed by truSculpt® iD:

  • Double chin
  • Belly fat
  • Love handles (flanks)
  • Inner and outer thigh fat
  • Back fat
  • Wobbly upper arms
  • Butt fat

They say beauty is only skin deep, but we all know how deep our skin’s health and appearance can affect our confidence, self-esteem, and peace of mind. And as different as each person is, so too is every person’s skin.

Everyone wants bright, even, and glowing skin because a radiant complexion is a sign of health, youth, and freshness. But the sad reality is that uneven, discoloured, and blotchy skin are common concerns caused by a variety of internal and external triggers.

Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless condition in which some areas of skin are darker than the surrounding skin. It occurs when specific cells in the skin make too much of the pigment called melanin. Hyperpigmentation may appear as freckles, age spots, or larger areas of darkened skin.

This article will dig deep into the causes of hyperpigmentation,  preventative measures, and options available to treat dark spots, uneven skin,  and discolouration.

What is Hyperpigmentation

All skin contains melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin and give skin its colour. In certain conditions,  melanocytes can become abnormal and cause an excessive amount of darkening, uneven tone, or discolouration.

Skin with too much melanin is called hyperpigmented skin. Skin with too little melanin is called hypopigmented. Skin with no melanin at all is called depigmented.

While hyperpigmentation usually isn’t harmful, it can be upsetting, and disturbing,  and can sometimes be a symptom of another medical condition.

Hyperpigmentation varies from person to person and from one area of the body to another. It can occur in small patches, over large areas, or affect the entire body.

Types of Hyperpigmentation

There are several types of hyperpigmentation, with melasma, sunspots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation being the most common.

  • Melasma – Melasma is normally caused by hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy. This type of hyperpigmentation can appear on any area of the body, but are most common on the stomach and face.
  • Sunspots – Also called liver spots or solar lentigines, sunspots are very common. Related to overexposure to the sun, sunspots can develop over time, generally appearing on areas exposed to the sun, like the tops of the hands and the face.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation –  A result of injury or inflammation to the skin, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is common among cystic acne sufferers.

Symptoms of Hyperpigmentation

Darkened areas on the skin are the most obvious symptoms of hyperpigmentation. Patches can vary in size, level of darkness, and location on the body.  People with naturally darker skin are more prone to experience hyperpigmentation due to increased melanin in the skin.

Causes of Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is caused by an excess production of melanin.  Several factors can alter the production of melanin in your body.

  • Prescription drugs – Medications that increase light sensitivity Pregnancy – Melasma, or pregnancy mask
  • Hormone system diseases –  An endocrine disease called Addison’s disease can produce hyperpigmentation in areas most frequently exposed to the sun and areas exposed to friction, such as the elbows and knees.
  • Sun exposure. The greatest risk factor associated with hyperpigmentation is sun exposure which causes an increase in melanin production.
  • Trauma to the skin, such as a wound or burn
  • Acne
  • Skin inflammation
  • Haemochromatosis  (an overload of iron)

Preventing Hyperpigmentation

Avoiding overexposure to the sun and wearing sunscreen are the two most important steps one can take to reduce or prevent hyperpigmentation. The best sunscreens are those that contain zinc oxide as the main active ingredient, contain an SPF of 30 to 50, and provide broad spectrum coverage.

Wearing Many Hats: Why Sun Exposure Causes Premature Ageing and How to Avoid It (While Still Enjoying It).

Sunscreen should be used daily, not just for days at the beach, pool, or participating in outdoor sports. Reapply it every 2 hours if you are out in the sun for extended periods and more frequently if you’re sweating or swimming.

For hyperpigmentation caused by skin disorders such as melasma,  a mineral sunscreen that contains iron oxide is recommended.

SPF-infused sun-protective clothing is now widely available and is recommended for use during prolonged periods in the sun.

Treating Hyperpigmentation

A dermatologist can diagnose the cause of hyperpigmentation by performing an exam and requesting a patient’s medical history to determine the cause. In some cases, a skin biopsy is performed.

Topical medications such as hydroquinone and retinoids are available to treat some cases of hyperpigmentation. Prolonged use of topical hydroquinone, however, can cause ochronosis, a darkening of the skin. For this reason, topical hydroquinone should only be used under the care of a physician.

Hyperpigmentation isn’t generally harmful, and in many cases, dark areas will fade on their own with good sun protection. In other cases, more aggressive treatment is needed.

Treatments like Lazer Genesis (insert link to Laser genesis article) and dermal peels can help to reduce hyperpigmentation.

There are also combinations of treatments that help with certain types of discoloured skin.

At Specialist Skin Solutions,  a physician-led cosmetic clinic specialising in non-surgical, anti-aging aesthetic procedures, including the latest laser techniques, dermal therapies, and anti-wrinkle injections, we proudly offer the latest treatments and products for hyperpigmentation and other skin concerns.

We believe in transparency and education first and foremost, providing every client with information, explanations, and treatment options before performing any procedure.  Offering a thorough consultation prior to treatment, we’ll discuss the areas of concern and the range of treatment options suggested to produce optimal results.  So, if you’re ready to get even with hyperpigmentation, book an appointment with us today! Stress is a part of the human condition, and almost everyone experiences it at some point in their lives. It’s widely known that stress is more than just a mental state—it can affect the entire body, including the heart and other vital organs. The largest organ in the body, the skin, can be affected by the ravishes of stress.

But the good news is, you don’t have to let stress get under your skin (both physically and metaphorically.)

In this article, we’ll explain the connection between the mind and the body, how stress can negatively impact good skin health, and what you can do to keep anxiety at bay before it wreaks havoc on your skin.

The Mind-Skin Connection

There is a strong correlation between the body and the mind and the way the body responds to changes in our psychological state. And it all starts before we are born.

When we’re small, as in just after conception, we’re just a mass of cells that divide, develop, split, and stretch. From a single layer of embryonic tissue, two separate but inherently interconnected systems are born—the brain and the skin. And they are bound for life.

Book Your Appointment Today!

When the brain senses embarrassment, the skin blushes; when the skin senses pain,  the brain processes it; and when the brain gets anxious about events like political unrest, global warming, or a highly contagious virus, the skin shows it—with a zit, an eczema outbreak, or a psoriasis flare-up, depending on the individual.

There are two different types of stress—acute and chronic. A sudden surge of stress, the kind that comes and goes, can be a good thing. It can enhance mental clarity, heighten senses, and create wound-repairing collagen.  But it’s the chronic stress—the ongoing and continuous kind—that can take a serious toll on the skin.

The last two-plus years have been that kind of stressful for most of us. Between the pandemic, political unrest, riots, and war, it’s no wonder we’re all feeling stress, and it’s written all over our collective faces.

Cortisol

Conditions like depression, anxiety, and stress can cause new skin problems to develop or existing issues to worsen. And much of this is caused by the overproduction of cortisol, the primary stress hormone, and its effect on the skin barrier, the barrier that traps moisture in and keeps allergens, irritants and pollutants out.

During times of stress, cortisol slows the production of beneficial oils, which causes the skin to get dry, rough, and irritated. Without adequate lipids to seal in hydration, the skin starts to leak water in a process known as transepidermal water loss.

At the same time, cortisol stimulates the overproduction of sebum, which is why our skin seems oilier when we’re under stress, leaving it open to acne breakouts.

All of this alters the skin’s pH and creates a hostile environment for the trillions of symbiotic microorganisms that exist on and in the microbiome, also known as the skin barrier.

Some microbes feed off sebum, which helps sustain healthy oil levels; others feed off dead skin cells, nature’s exfoliation; some produce peptides and ceramides that keep skin firm and moisturized; and still other microbes offer protection from pollution, sunlight, and pathogens.

Stress also prompts the body to produce free radicals, which target various cells in the body. When free radicals target DNA, it can lead to skin cancer. When They target collagen, it can lead to wrinkles. And when free radicals target lipids, it can lead to dehydration and acne.

Long-term exposure to cortisol can also inhibit the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen, the chemicals that keep skin plump and youthful.

Oddly enough, skin-care products containing hyaluronic acid and collagen are actually not meant for people under stress. They are really meant for people who have healthy skin. That’s because most topical ingredients can’t penetrate deep down to the lower layer of the dermis. Exposing a broken barrier to too many topical agents can, in fact, exacerbate existing issues.

Ingredients like glycolic acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinol  are very ineffective on stressed-out skin because they deplete the normal, healthy barrier function, so it’s best to remove them from your skincare routine when you’re under stress.

Inflammation

Psychological conditions like stress and anxiety can also cause internal inflammation because when your brain perceives a threat, the immune system sends out a response to protect and heal the body. A body under stress causes the immune system to go hog wild, sending out an inflammatory response. And the same response happens in the skin, which can cause conditions like cystic acne.

On top of all of that, stress can also cause inflammation in the gut, causing another reaction that affects the skin. This gut-skin connection impacts the balance of bacteria in your gut, which leads to a release of inflammation that can work to magnify chronic inflammatory skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis,  which can flare up when a person is stressed.

Managing stress

Managing stress may seem nearly impossible these days with so many stressful factors bombarding us every day. But a majority of our stress-induced issues do not actually come from the stressors themselves. Instead, they come from the way we deal with the stressors.

Tips for Keeping Your Skin (and Your Head) Stress-Free

  • Maintain a healthy skincare routine: A consistent and thorough skincare routine every day, even on days when you feel tired or stressed, is critical to quell the effects of stress on the skin. Never forget to take off your makeup and wash your face before bed, no matter how crummy you might feel, because neglecting your skin worsens existing skin issues or can cause new ones, creating a vicious cycle.
  • Exercise regularly: Exercise releases feel-good hormones that can boost energy, mood, and outlook. Exercise also increases antioxidants and lowers cortisol levels, meaning fewer breakouts and a stronger skin barrier.
  • Maintain a healthy diet: To prevent free radical damage, fill your plate with antioxidants, which stabilize unstable molecules to leave skin clearer, calmer, and brighter. Vitamins A and C, lycopene, astaxanthin, and polyphenols are all great options that can be obtained from eating a healthy, well-balanced diet with whole foods.  Equally important, avoiding processed and sugar-laden foods that trigger more inflammation inside your body is essential.
  • Get plenty of rest: Sleep gives your body the time it needs to heal. It also improves your mood, boosts energy levels, and aids in cognition.
  • Take time for self-care: Find time to relax and participate in re-energizing activities that make you happy. Take a bath, read a book, get a massage, listen to music, meditate, practice yoga, pet a dog, hold a baby, or do whatever it takes to make you feel good.
  • Spend time with nature: Simply getting outside and witnessing the strength of a tree, the scent of flowers,  or the songs of birds has been proven to lower inflammation in the body.
  • Have a good cry: Crying is a stress reliever that helps decrease cortisol levels,  which can result in fewer breakouts.

Sadly, no matter how hard you try, stress can leave lasting damage to your skin. And we’re here to help. Which Lip Augmentation Options are the Best? How Long Do They Last? Are they Safe?

Lip augmentation has been growing in popularity due to the rising demand for pouty, bee-stung lips, set off by hype on social media.

There are several types of lip augmentation procedures, both non-surgical fillers and surgical, including permanent implants, lip lifts, and fat transfers, all of which add volume to thinning lips, eradicate smokers’ lines, and create a more youthful appearance. But with so many options out there, it could be hard to know which procedure is right for you. In this post, we’ll give you the answers you need so you’ll be fully equipped to make an informed decision.

What is Lip Augmentation?

Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure, most commonly performed as an outpatient in a provider’s office, that creates fuller, sexier, more youthful-looking lips. There are different types of lip augmentation to fit a patient’s budget, lip shape and size, and goals. Some procedures are nonsurgical, using fillers to plump up the lips temporarily. Others involve small incisions in the lips and/or nasal area for longer or permanent results.

Types of Lip Augmentation

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a substance that is naturally produced by the body. HA fillers can add volume to the lips and enhance their shape and structure by not only plumping the lips but also by trapping water within the lips for a more naturalistic, full pout.

There are several hyaluronic acid fillers on the market, each of which works to smooth lines and wrinkles around the mouth, add volume to the lips, minimise the signs of ageing, and improve lip symmetry. The end result is plump, smooth, and very natural-looking lips.

The procedure takes anywhere from five to 30 minutes, depending on the amount of product used. It can take several days to see the full results from HA filler injections, though many patients see results immediately.

Lip injections are safe and relatively painless, though slight swelling or inflammation is common after treatment.

Other possible risks and side effects of HA injections include:

  • Bruising
  • Allergic reactions
  • Bleeding

The actual procedure involves cleaning the injection site and administering the product into the area with an ultra-fine needle. Providers normally sculpt the substance into the area and shape using their hands. Some products have lidocaine, which lessens discomfort during the treatment, though sometimes a provider may also numb the injection site with local anaesthesia before the procedure.

Collagen Lip Fillers

Once the most common types of dermal filler, collagen lip fillers have dipped in popularity in recent years due to the comfort and more naturalistic appearance provided by HA fillers. Though collagen fillers tend to last longer and the latest options are considered safer than previous versions, collagen injections have dipped down in popularity compared to HA fillers.

Collagen works by plumping the lips, whereas HA fillers not only plump the lips but also trap water within the lips for a more naturalistic, full pout.

Permanent Silicone Lip Implants

While HA fillers will only last for a maximum of six to 12 months, silicone lip implants are permanent and don’t require any maintenance. These lip-shaped implants are inserted via two tiny incisions made into the lips. Unlike older materials, the latest silicone implants for the lips can easily be removed. Due to certain post-procedural issues and a less-than-natural feeling, silicone fillers have grown less popular with patients in recent years as HA has become the leading filler product.

Fat Transfer Lip Injections

Fat transfer lip injections, also known as Autologous Fat Injections or grafting can enhance the size, fullness, texture, and symmetry of the lips. By obtaining fat cells from the patient’s buttocks, abdomen, or thighs, all of which are rich in body fat content, the fat is purified, processed, and injected into the lip area. Providers typically inject 2 cc’s to 10 cc’s of fat into patients’ lips and smile lines. Recovery time for fat transfer injections is much slower than that of HA fillers.

Patients may expect swelling, bruising, stiffness, chapped lips, and look overdone at first. The fat injections will eventually improve the appearance of the patient’s lips, making them more structurally attractive due to the stimulation of lip growth and fat placement inside the lips.

Fat transfers require up to three treatments to obtain the desired results, and while they can yield more permanent results than dermal fillers, due to a less than predictable rate of absorption and a higher likelihood of lumpiness, they’ve been surpassed in popularity by HA fillers in recent years.

Lip Lifts

Another surgical procedure, known as a lip lift, is a different kind of in-office surgical procedure that can enhance the look of lips. A permanent procedure, a lip lift works by shortening the space between the nose and the top of the lip, known as the “philtrum.”

The procedure increases the amount of visible pink tissue which makes the lips look fuller and more pronounced. It also makes upper-middle teeth more visible and more pronounced when resting, which makes this a good option for people who want to add height instead of volume to their lips.

There are several types of lip lifts. It’s important to have an informed discussion with your provider about which is right for you.

Direct lip lift: Sometimes called a gullwing lip lift, a direct lip lift creates a more defined lip border. A thin strip of skin is removed just above the upper lip, and the skin is pulled upwards, creating the illusion of a more pronounced vermillion (the pink part of the lips). This procedure can leave a scar on the upper lip area.

Subnasal bullhorn: One of the more common lip lift procedures, a subnasal bullhorn involves making an incision along the base of the nose in the shape of a bullhorn. The upper lip is all pulled up toward the nose.

Central lip lift: Similar to a subnasal bullhorn lift, a central lip lift shortens the space between the nose and the lips.

Corner lip lift: Sometimes called a “grin lift” because it gives the face a more smiley appearance, a corner lip lift is done by making two small incisions at both corners of the mouth and removing a small amount of skin. It is quite common to have this procedure done in tandem with another lip lift or lip filler.

Italian lip lift: Similar to the bullhorn, an Italian lip lift requires two incisions below each nostril. The benefit of this procedure over the bullhorn lift is that it typically does not leave a noticeable scar.

How long does lip augmentation last?

  • Lip fillers: 6 months to a year
  • Fat grafting: At least 5 years
  • Permanent silicone implants: Permanent
  • Lip Lift: Permanent

Who is a good candidate for lip augmentation?

Your provider will help you decide whether you’re a good candidate for lip augmentation and which procedure is best for you, but in most cases, the following conditions make someone a good candidate for lip augmentation:

  • The patient is in good health.
  • The patient either doesn’t smoke or can quit smoking before the procedure.
  • The patient does not have an active infection like a cold sore.
  • The patient does not have a chronic condition like diabetes, herpes, or lupus.
  • The patient has realistic expectations about the results.

Procedure Details

Preparing for lip augmentation

Prior to the procedure, patients will need to stop taking blood-thinning medication, avoid taking pain relievers like aspirin, discontinue the use of herbal supplements like multivitamins and fish oil, and if applicable, cease the use of nicotine and tobacco products.

Follow-up instructions

To aid in healing and optimising results, the patient should:

  • eat soft foods for the first few days;
  • elevate their head while sleeping;
  • not move lips excessively;
  • and apply ice to your lips for several days.

What to expect

With nonsurgical lip augmentation, such as fillers, patients can typically return to work right away. Surgical lip augmentation procedures may require some downtime. With any lip augmentation procedure, it’s best to avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for up to several weeks.

Benefits of Non-surgical vs. Surgical Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation can give lips a fuller, younger look, and depending on the procedure, results in little to no pain and minimal to no downtime. A non-surgical form of lip augmentation, lip filler injections provide temporary benefits which can last up to 12 months.

Lip fillers offer several benefits, including less bruising and reasonably long-lasting results. What’s more, the injections can be administered gradually until the desired result is achieved. To maintain the desired enhancements, patients will need to undergo more injections every six to nine months.

Fillers can also be dissolved with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid.

Surgical procedures like silicone implants, fat transfer, and lip lifts, though falling out of favour in recent years due to an increase in filler quality and longer-lasting results, are permanent. Though some surgical procedures leave a small scar behind, more and more techniques are being introduced every day that eliminate the visible appearance of scars.

Potential Complications and Risks

Though rare, there is always a potential for risks and complications with all lip augmentation, including:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Infection
  • Lip stiffening
  • Scarring
  • Swelling
  • Non-symmetrical lips

Plump, full, luscious lips are all the rage among the Gen Z set these days, so it’s not surprising that the greatest number of people electing to have Dermal Lip Filler procedures are women in their 20s.

Even though most lips eventually fall prey to the effects of aging,  some people are just born with naturally thin or distorted lips. And still, there are others who have been genetically graced with full lips and want them to be even fuller.

Why Do 20-Year-Olds Get Fillers? Here’s why:

Book Your Appointment Today!

The first explanation behind the big lip sensation is that celebrities are increasingly opting for augmentation procedures and sharing their results on social media.

Kylie Jenner, one of the most widely known celebs that have admitted to using dermal filler, frequently posts images of her plump pout on social media and in her marketing campaigns for her Kylie Cosmetics line featuring lip-enhancing makeup.

Showing off her sexy, plump lips online has created a media frenzy prompting twenty-somethings from all over the globe to jump on the dermal filler bandwagon.

The second reason that dermal lip filler treatments are becoming increasingly part of the beauty mainstream is that they are more widely available.  In fact, there are more TGA-approved fillers on the market in 2022 than ever before, with lip filler procedures becoming almost as commonplace as mani-pedis.

As a result of their presence in the spotlight, dermal lip fillers have become a lucrative business, with droves of non-medical providers offering some type of lip injection services at their practices, including everyone from nail techs to dentists, many of whom are not medically trained to perform this procedure.

Still another reason for the rise in popularity, derma lip filler injections are relatively painless, undetectable, and produce immediate, IG-worthy, results. And because the procedure requires minimal aftercare and little to no side effects, there is zero downtime, allowing patients to get back to their lives on the same day.

What exactly are Dermal Filler Injections?

Dermal Fillers are made from an injectable gel made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance produced by the body that attracts and binds water, helping the skin stay plump and hydrated.

As we age, it is common to experience a loss of subcutaneous fat, change in bone structure, gravity and loss of elastin and collagen, saggy skin, lines, and hollowing over certain facial features, which can leave the skin less hydrated and as a result, less plump.  When injected into the skin, dermal fillers restore volume, soften and fill lines, and contour the cheeks and jawline. When injected into the lips and the skin around them, dermal fillers add volume and symmetry, soften and fill lines, and create plump, luscious, fuller-looking lips by expanding the tissue beneath the area to produce a subtle, natural look that can last *6 to 18 months.

Why the Right Provider Makes A Big Difference

While in the right hands, dermal lip filler injections are completely safe,  performed incorrectly, results can be unsightly, ineffective, or even harmful to one’s health. That’s why, whether you’re 22 or 82,  it’s important to do your research and choose an experienced, reputable, licensed provider, as any injectable treatment can pose potential risks.

Do you have scars from cystic acne, broken capillaries on your nose, or unsightly age spots? Restoring and rejuvenating skin from beneath the surface, Laser Genesis uses a heat-based laser to target deep layers of the skin. Triggering the skin’s natural healing process to stimulate collagen production, Laser Genesis leaves skin resilient, radiant, and healthy-looking skin, revealing a youthful glow in just one session.

Laser Genesis is the latest in technological innovations for skin rejuvenation, a medical procedure effective for softening wrinkles, reducing dark spots, healing acne scars, making large pores appear less visible,  and reducing fine lines around the delicate eye area.

Let’s take a deeper look at Laser Genesis.

What are the Benefits of Laser Genesis?

Laser Genesis effectively heals scarring caused by acne, surgery, or burns and redness and broken blood vessels caused by rosacea and simultaneously erases fine lines, reduces the appearance of deep wrinkles, evens texture, reduces pores, and eliminates age spots. The icing on the cake is the boost of radiance and firmness Laser Genesis gives the skin by stimulating collagen production. Laser Genesis can be used to treat any part of the body; however, it is predominantly used on the face, neck, chest, and hands.

How Does Laser Genesis Work?

Laser Genesis is a non-ablative laser used to treat the dermis – the middle layer of skin. The basic difference between ablative and non-ablative treatments is that ablative lasers remove the top layer of skin, while non-ablative lasers work by heating the underlying skin tissue without harming the surface, allowing the body to naturally produce new collagen  And Laser Genesis does not wound the skin. Instead, it works by penetrating the top layer of skin and delivering thousands of micro-pulses of light to the dermis. The warming action shrinks blood vessels, breaks down scar tissue, and stimulates collagen production, leaving skin free of scars, broken blood vessels, and redness.

What to Expect on the Day of Treatment

On the day of treatment,  you can expect an easy, pain-free, and surprisingly relaxing hour at the doctor’s office. The treatment area will be cleaned to ensure your skin is free of any lotions or makeup, and eye protection will be placed over your eyes to protect them from the laser.

An experienced technician will move the Laser Genesis wand over the affected area in a continuous and repetitive motion. While the wand is moving over your skin, you may feel a slight warming sensation. Some patients say it feels like a relaxing massage. After 20-30 minutes, your treatment is complete. Sunscreen will be applied to protect the newly treated skin from the sun. Now you are free to return to your busy schedule with zero downtime!

What are the Benefits of Laser Genesis?

Laser Genesis simultaneously restores and rejuvenates the skin with results that include:

  • Removal of scars – Laser Genesis gives new hope to patients who thought they would have to live with their scars forever.
  • Relief from severe redness (also known as rosacea) – For patients that have tried to conceal their rosacea with topical treatments and makeup for years without success, Laser Genesis makes the worries, embarrassment, and stress go away by eliminating the constant need to cover up, decreasing redness, eliminating broken blood vessels, and restoring an even coloration to the skin.
  • Rejuvenating boost of collagen – As we age, our skin begins to decrease its production of collagen. The lack of collagen gives our skin a lackluster, saggy, aging appearance. But Laser Genesis counteracts the aging process by stimulating the body’s natural ability to produce collagen and promoting cell renewal within the dermis. The result is a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, and irregular texture.

When Will I See the Results?

While a minimum of three sessions is typically recommended, with optimal results being achieved after ten visits, treatment plans vary by patient based on the size of the treatment area and severity of their skin concerns. Most patients notice gradual, cumulative results over the course of their treatment plan. At your consultation, Dr. Beldholm or one of his trained Laser Genesis skin experts will assess your skin and determine the number of treatments that will give you the results you desire.

Once your treatment plan is determined, you will return every four weeks. While results for the treatment of scars are considered permanent, yearly follow-up treatments are recommended yearly for patients with rosacea and broken blood vessels to maintain optimal benefits. As with most treatments, the long-term results of Laser Genesis vary by patient, the extent of the skin’s damage, and how well the patient cares for their skin. Wearing sunscreen, following a daily skin care regimen, exercising, eating well, consuming minimal alcohol, and avoiding exposure to pollution and cigarette smoke (both first and second-hand) will help with the treatment’s long-term effectiveness and allow for the amount of time between treatments to be extended.

Are There Side Effects?

Unlike traditional laser treatments, Laser Genesis treats and rejuvenates the skin from beneath the surface, which means that the top layer, or epidermis, is not injured during the procedure. The most commonly reported side effect is mild, temporary redness of the treatment area, but this will resolve as your skin begins to heal.

How Much Does it Cost?

The cost of Laser Genesis varies by patient, depending on the size, severity, and the number of areas affected. Doctor Beldholm and his experienced staff will assess your skin, make a recommendation on the number of treatments needed to achieve the desired results, and advise you on the cost of your treatment plan at your consultation.

Is Laser Genesis Right For Me?

Just about anyone is a good candidate for Laser Genesis. Most patients choose Laser Genesis to eliminate acne scars, burns, enlarged pores, rosacea, or broken capillaries. We must caution that people with autoimmune diseases, active cystic acne, or who have used or are currently using certain medications to treat acne may want to consider alternative treatments.

If you want to refresh, repair and rejuvenate damaged or problem skin, call Specialist Skin Solutions today to schedule a consultation. You’re just a few sessions away from having scar-free, rosacea-free, glowing skin at last!

The face is not the only place where wrinkles and fine lines rear their ugly heads. They can also grace us with their presence on the chest, cleavage, and neck, an area also known as the décolletage.

The chest area is one of the first areas to show signs of ageing, due to sun damage and the natural ageing process. Often called the décolletage, the chest commonly develops wrinkles and thin, crepey skin over the years. This is caused by a decrease in collagen production and less elasticity. Collagen and elastin, the proteins that give your skin its firm appearance, live in the dermis, your skin’s second layer. Most of the factors that cause wrinkles on your chest are connected to these proteins breaking down, resulting in visible fine lines. Lines on the chest are also quite common among women as a result of breast tissue pulling on the skin.

Body wrinkles, also known as rhytides, are folds on your body where the skin has lost its structure. The difference between wrinkles and rhytides is subtle. While rhytides is a term that’s used as a synonym for wrinkles sometimes, the two aren’t exactly the same.

Rhytides are fine lines and creases that appear first, while wrinkles are the deeper folds or creases that often follow rhytides. Seeking treatments for rhytides can be the most effective way to keep skin looking smooth and firm; in other words, it’s best to get to the root of the problem before too many wrinkles are involved.

Causes of wrinkles on your chest

Sun exposure

Sunbathing in a low-cut bathing suit top can give you a sexy, bronzy tan, but it comes at a cost. Not only does prolonged exposure to the sun cause premature ageing, but it creates free radicals, toxins that break down the elastin fibres in your skin. Learn more about how the sun is to blame for the wrinkly skin on your body in our post, Blame it on the Sunshine: The Truth About Photoageing, Extrinsic Ageing, and Solar Radiation.

Genetics

Even if you can’t blame your body wrinkles on the sunshine, you can blame it on your parents! Genetics is the main factor that determines your skin’s texture and structure, so it makes sense that getting wrinkles at a certain age can run in your family. But, don’t be upset. They can be fixed just like the ones on your face!

When you lose a significant amount of weight, sagging skin and wrinkles can be a side effect. Gaining weight stretches the elastin and collagen in your skin. When you lose fat underneath your skin layer, these fibres don’t always shrink back. This can result in wrinkles in your chest area, similar to those stretch marks you can get on your belly and breasts when you’re pregnant.

Tobacco smoking

Smoking tobacco increases exposure to environmental toxins, which can be a  trigger for free radical production on your skin. This is especially true for exposed areas of your skin like your face, neck, and chest.

Pregnancy

Breastfeeding and pregnancy cause your breasts to swell for a period of time. While your breasts fill with milk, they become heavier, which can put stress on the proteins in your skin layers. Sometimes even after you are done breastfeeding, you will notice that there is a new shape to your breasts and potentially, wrinkles on and between your breasts.

Bras and shapewear

The bras that you wear can influence whether you get chest wrinkles. Some people need a lot of support for their breasts to work against gravity and keep from damaging elastin and collagen in the skin layer. If you wear bras that fit improperly, don’t offer enough support, or crush your breasts down, you may notice wrinkles on your chest over time.

Sleep position

In addition to the amount of time you sleep, experts have also discovered that the way you sleep might also be a contributing factor in the early ageing process. Stomach sleeping has been found to be a cause of wrinkles in the late twenties and early thirties.

This is because of the long amount of time your face is pressed into a pillow.  Because of this simple-to-solve solution, experts suggest sleeping on your back might be where it’s at. So, next time you’re about to drift off to dreamland, turn over a new leaf and sleep on your back.

If you are a side sleeper, you may be at a higher risk of developing wrinkles on your chest. Sleeping on the same side every night causes your breasts to hang over in one direction for the duration of the night. Over time, gravity can contribute to deep, vertical wrinkles on your chest from sleeping on your side.

Topical steroid medications

Topical steroid medications are sometimes prescribed to treat skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis. These medications can actually atrophy and thin the skin’s layer. Once your skin layer is thinner, it’s more likely to become leathery, crinkled, or wrinkly.

Ways To Prevent Wrinkles On Your Chest, Neck, and Cleavage

The fact is—all skin is ageing skin. Not one of us can travel back in time.  Cleavage wrinkles affect all age groups, so it’s never too early to start some proactive habits. Here are a few:

Set Them Free

If your breasts are supported in their natural, comfortable position, they won’t be overly subjected to the pull of gravity, and they won’t be smashed together to form creases and crinkles. So, wear a properly fitting bra, avoid push-up bras, and ditch your sports bra as soon as you finish your workout.

Stay in the Shade

Sun is your skin’s worst enemy, so the best thing you can do is to avoid those UV rays whenever possible. When you are in the sun, wear sunscreen with an SPF 30 every day, rain or shine—and that means the chest and neck too! In fact, just one sunburn on your chest can break down collagen and cause irreparable damage to the elastic structure of the skin, which not only thins out the already delicate skin there but affects its ability to stretch and bounce back.

Develop Good Sleep Habits

Getting plenty of sleep is crucial for good skin, but take it a step further and try sleeping on your back.

Treatments

While it’s well-known that facial wrinkles can be minimised with certain products and procedures, many people may not realise that the wrinkles on the body can also be improved with medical treatments and even some home remedies.

Ultimately, the skin on your chest and cleavage is just that: skin. It responds to the same ingredients we use on our faces, even though most of us aren’t slathering our bosoms with anti-ageing creams on a daily basis (though we probably should be.) But, remember, the chest is a high histamine area, meaning it’s very sensitive, so tread lightly.

Below are a few ways to get rid of chest wrinkles naturally:

Wrinkle creams

Wrinkle cream for your décolletage can include many of the same active ingredients that you use on your face. Topical antioxidants and retinoids can encourage cell turnover while protecting your skin. Soothing natural ingredients, such as aloe and shea butter can seal in moisture and help skin look more firm. Products with hyaluronic acid also have a hydrating and “plumping” effect on the skin.

Mask-up

Sunday nights are a great time to unwind and mask up. While you’ve got that face mask marinating already, why not incorporate a chest treatment, too? Aloe vera is a phenomenal natural ingredient when it comes to skin healing. It’s been used for thousands of years to treat wounds, burns, and more—but it’s also well-respected as a powerful anti-ageing resource with highly effective wrinkle-fighting properties that have been backed by science. It’s especially perfect for the chest area, as it’s soothing, hydrating, and gentle.

The most potent and effective form of aloe vera is straight from the source. Get your hands on a fresh aloe plant and chop off a thick, juicy leaf. Slice it longways, and scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Apply the gel to your chest and cleavage area and let it absorb for about 20 minutes.

Silicone Décolleté Pads

Over-the-counter silicone pads are sometimes used to treat wrinkles in the area right above your cleavage. These silicone pads claim to restore structure to the area.

Cindy Crawford told Vogue Magazine in 2016 that she keeps a scarf in her car just to protect her décolletage from the sun, and she sleeps with a silicone pad in between her breasts in preparation for red carpets and photoshoots. Say what? Yes! It may seem crazy that a pad made from 100% silicone could have such a serious impact on our skin, but these sticky patches are a celebrity secret weapon.

Note: Silicone sheets are used for the treatment of hypertrophic scarring, however, the success of this treatment is just anecdotal at this point.

Exercise

So you’ve got all the creams, masks, scrubs, and tools—but if your chest has turned to mush from the inside, your efforts could be null and void. Part of the reason the cleavage area is so prone to lines and folds is the lack of muscle volume in that area, combined with thinner-than-average skin.

Try sneaking in 20 pushups a day before you jump in the shower, or incorporate a few days of yoga a week (those vinyasas are major pectoral boosters!), and you could see some impact on skin volume over time. As an added benefit, exercise means extra blood flow and oxygen to the cells, which helps to nourish the skin, too.

Hormonal Therapy

As if we didn’t have enough to deal with during menopause, this “change of life” is also associated with an acceleration of skin ageing, which naturally means more chest lines, sagging, dryness, and even hyperpigmentation. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been shown to improve skin texture, hydration, elasticity, and even thickness.

Note: There are some health risks that may be associated with HRT, so you should always consult a doctor before taking any medications.

Medical-Grade Treatments

Chest wrinkles may benefit from some home therapies such as wrinkle cream, serums, and over-the-counter chest pads, but treatments such as laser therapy, chemical peels, filler injections, and medical-grade skin care products are much more effective. Two of the most common solutions recommended are injections and laser procedures.

Laser Genesis

There are several hyaluronic acid fillers on the market, each of which works to smooth lines and wrinkles, minimise the signs of ageing, and improve the look of the skin on the chest and neck areas

The procedure takes anywhere from five to 30 minutes, depending on the amount of product used. It can take several days to see the full results from HA filler injections, though many patients see results immediately.

Anti-wrinkle injections are safe and relatively painless, though slight swelling or inflammation is common after treatment.

Other possible risks and side effects of HA injections include:

  • Bruising
  • Allergic reactions
  • Bleeding

Collagen Fillers

In addition to hyaluronic acid anti-wrinkle injections, collagen dermal fillers work to soften wrinkles and reduce fill lines. A medical injectable gel made from hyaluronic acid, fillers help the skin stay plump and hydrated.

Like anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers are not permanent but results can last longer, from 6 to 18 months.

Takeaway

Skincare doesn’t start at your forehead and end at your chin. Great skin should actually be an entire-body self-care regimen.

No matter your age, the extent of damage, or the reason, the prognosis is good! Chest and cleavage wrinkles can be avoided, improved, and reversed if you have a few weapons in your arsenal.

It’s never too late to turn back the hands of time and put lines and wrinkles on the chest, neck, décolletage, and Cleavage in the rearview window.

Our faces change throughout our lives. As we grow from birth to adulthood, many dramatic changes occur, and the changes continue as we grow older. Weight gain or loss, pregnancy, changes in activity levels, and sun exposure can all affect the look of your face. Wrinkles develop in places where your muscles move, such as the areas around your mouth, eyes, and forehead. These deep wrinkles are the hardest to get rid of.

Frown lines, sometimes called worry lines, “11” lines, or the technical term, Glabellar lines,  are deep vertical wrinkles that develop between the eyebrows. They may appear as a single vertical line, as two or more lines, or as angled lines that lean toward the inner corners of the eyebrows, and are the result of your forehead muscles squeezing inward as you furrow your brows.

When you were young, they may have only been noticeable when you made certain facial expressions. Over time, though, the tissue around the muscles might have developed wrinkles that never smooth out.

Wrinkles are not just the result of looking sad. Joyous expressions such as smiling and laughing start to show visible traces of  movement patterns as well. The result is smile lines around the mouth, lines around the eyes,  and horizontal expression lines on your forehead.

As you age, the expression lines on your face can start to look more prominent. As skin loses elasticity and firmness, the skin begins to look thinner and bones become more prominent. The connective tissues in the skin and cartilage also get weaker, leading to looser skin which reveals expression lines more clearly.

Other Causes of Frown Lines

Frown lines are primarily caused by the loss of skin elasticity that doesn’t allow skin to return to its original state as quickly when we age. There are several factors that contribute to the development of frown lines, including:

  • Genetics. Your DNA determines whether you have the type of skin that is resilient and can delay lines or the type of skin that is more prone to lines and wrinkles.
  • Sunlight. The UV rays in sunlight break down the elastin and collagen in your skin, making you more susceptible to the formation of lines.
  • Repeated expressions. Frowning, smiling, squinting or furrowing your eyebrows often may make it more likely to develop deep forehead  lines.
  • Stress causes facial tension, which can lead to frown lines.
  • Smoking. The repeated motion of smoking a cigarette or cigar can cause frown lines around the mouth. The act of inhaling causes wrinkles and lines due to a narrowing of the blood vessels.

Can I Get Rid of Frown Lines?

Frown lines between the eyebrows can actually make you look angry or serious, even when you don’t feel that way.  So,  what can you do about it?

One way to get rid of frown lines is to use over-the-counter or prescription anti-wrinkle treatments. But though those treatments are recommended for fine lines, they are not as effective on deep frown line wrinkles.

There are many tactics people attempt to remove frown lines including:

  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Taking supplement that includes omega-3 fatty acids
  • Drinking more water
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Sleeping on your back.
  • Using sunscreen  every day.
  • Wearing sunglasses. Not only will sunglasses keep you from squinting, but they’ll protect the skin around your eyes.
  • Moisturizing your face at least three times each day.
  • Exfoliating skin

Home Remedies

There are many home remedies for dealing with frown lines.

  • Applying egg whites to the frown lines between your eyes/eyebrows
  • Applying yogurt mixed with honey, lemon juice, and  vitamin E
  • Massaging coconut oil or sweet almond oil into  frown lines
  • Taking flaxseed oil  internally
  • Applying a mashed avocado mask
  • Exercising the frontalis muscle, also called the epicranial muscle, two sections of the forehead in the top, upper-rear portion of the skull.

Effective Treatments for Turning  Frown Lines Upside Down

While we all wish we could smile everyday, those pesky frown lines are bound to appear eventually. And sadly, no matter how hard you try, frown lines can be tough to tackle. While we can’t wish them away, we can stop the lines from getting deeper and more noticeable  with effective treatment plans like those offered at Specialist Skin Solutions.

Minimally invasive options for reducing the appearance of frown lines are effective,  painless  and have little to no recovery time. Anti-wrinkle injections are one of the most popular treatments for defeating frown lines.  When injected into a muscle, these injections cause the muscle to relax and limit its movements.

This treatment not only makes existing lines look smoother as soon as the injection takes effect, but the injections also act as a paralytic, making it hard to tighten your brow muscles. Not allowing your eyebrows to move inward keeps the development of additional or deeper lines to a minimum.

The injections only take a few minutes to administer, are relatively painless, and there is no recovery time.  Injections generally  take up to two weeks to reach full results and last between 3 and 6 months.
